Antique J Curwen Linen Backed Singing Teaching Chart
An antique teaching chart for teaching how to sing in harmony.
The Curwen Modulator changed music history, being responsible for the emergence of choral singing as we know it today!
J. Curwen invented this chart in the mid 1800’s, initially to help aid school children to sing together.
It was soon adopted by Welsh Male Voice Choirs, who until then sung in unison rather than harmony!
These charts are rare to find nowadays, one is displayed in the British Museum.
The chart states at the foot of it that it can be ordered as is for Sixpence or mounted on rollers for 2 shillings if you require the rollers to be varnished it is 6d extra! So this was the rolls Royce version in its day.
There is some slight damage on the front near the bottom, (see pics) however it doesn’t spoil this wonderful piece of British history!
