These boxes were and still are today used to pack ceramics in or anything else that maybe breakable.
This one is obviously a vintage box made from wood, with original calligraphy on the front back and lid. This is still something that is done today in Japan, a lot of bowls etc are packed in wooden boxes like this one.
This is perfect as a little storage for bits and bobs or photographs cards, etc
